The conference theme was ‘Environment, Heritage, Sustainability’. In a rapidly changing heritage landscape, the need for museums to be sustainable is increasingly important. Museums are urged to make sustainable choices when considering staffing, finances and environmental decisions. For small museums, these decisions can be in conflict with the needs and expectations of volunteers and reliance on constrained budgets. The conference focussed on the ideas of the ‘environmental museum’ and the ‘sustainable museum’, with a particular focus on the cultural value of museums in our communities. We welcomed many wonderful delegates to this exciting event where they networked with like-minded volunteers and professionals, while discovering how Queensland’s small museums can be established as foremost thinkers in the movement towards historically and environmentally sustainable museums.
